Blues for a dead pin-up

Dit is het verhaal over een jonge tekenaar die geen zin had om te tekenen. Lange avonden bracht hij alleen door op zijn zolderkamer, tokkelend op een gitaar die hij niet kon bespelen: mijmerend over een anonieme pin-up aan de muur wier leven hij trachtte te verbeelden.

Wat hier getoond wordt, vormt een bloemlezing.


This is the story about a young draftsman who didn’t feel like drawing. Instead he spent many solitary evenings up in his attic, plucking a guitar he couldn’t play: to muse about an unknown pin-up on the wall whose life he tried to imagine. What follows is an anthology in three stages.





Culmination of a two-year practical study into the appropriation of the poor image (after Hito Steyerl's essay 'In Defense of the Poor Image', 2009) and a theoretical study on the necessity of violent imagery (after Susan Sontag's essay 'Regarding the Pain of Others', 2003).

A swan-song called Autumn

NL "De geluidsinstallatie A swan-song called Autumn bestaat uit John McCormack’s versie van de oorlogshymne It’s a long way to tipperary (1914). Deze lofzang wordt door vertraging verbasterd tot klaaglied. De trotse soldaat, verlangend naar zijn beminde, werd gestript van enige heroïek. Hij wordt een symbool voor eenieder die omwille van oorlog niet kan terugkeren naar geliefden, noch naar een thuis. Honderd jaar geleden vluchtten honderdduizenden Belgen over de staatsgrenzen naar Nederland, Frankrijk en Groot-Britannië. Hoewel dit kunstwerk zich binnen de westerse culturele traditie van oorlogsherdenking bevindt, raakt het een universeel thema aan. Miljoenen oorlogsvluchtelingen uit het woelige Midden-Oosten trekken vandaag richting Europa. Ook zij hebben nood aan bijstand en recht op opvang. EN "The sound installation A swan-song called Autumn consists of John McCormack's version of the war anthem It's a long way to tipperary (1914). Extremely delayed, this hymn corrupts into a lamentation. The longing soldier is stripped of heroism, and thus becomes a symbol for all those incapable of returning to their homes or loved ones because of war. One century ago, hundreds of thousands of Belgians fled across the border to the Netherlands, France and Great Britain. Although this artwork functions within the Western cultural tradition of war memorial, it strikes a universal theme. Today, millions of war refugees from the troubled Middle East journey towards Europe. They too are in need of assistance and have a right to shelter. This installation conceptualizes the failing awareness of these contemporary problems amidst an indifferent society." -- accompanying text during A swan-song called Autumn,
